Hands For Hunger

OUR MISSION

Hands For Hunger is a humanitarian organization committed to the elimination of unnecessary hunger and the reduction of food waste through the creation of meaningful and engaging partnerships formed amongst all sectors of the Bahamian community. We strive to inspire a shared sense of social and environmental responsibility amongst citizens, who, individually and collectively, come to realize the power of their own contributions. We do this by food rescue and distribution, education and other innovative solutions aimed at achieving national food security.

Hands For Hunger was started by a group of Bahamian student leaders, led by Alanna Rodgers in early 2008.  These students were committed to making a difference in the world.

Our inspiration was founded on the critical realization that an incredible amount of unspoiled food is thrown away every single day by restaurants, hotels, cruise ships, markets, bakeries, and other local vendors. Meanwhile, countless people struggle to secure their next meal. We asked ourselves: how can we possibly expect issues of violence, crime, poor education, unemployment, and environmental ills to be eliminated, when we cannot first satisfy the most basic of human needs by guaranteeing that every citizen has food to eat?

Hands for Hunger is the Food Bank of the Bahamas. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity through food rescue, distribution, and community-based programs.

The H4H Pantry supports over 15,000 people, providing nutritious groceries to families in need, while the H4H School Pantries ensure that children in 15 public schools have access to food. They've also expanded to the Family Islands through mobile community markets, reaching those in remote areas where food access is more challenging.

At the heart of Hands for Hunger’s mission is food rescue, the core initiative that started it all. Through this program, Hands for Hunger collects fresh surplus food from hotels, wholesalers, and restaurants, and donates it to over 40 agencies in New Providence with feeding programs, helping to nourish vulnerable individuals and families.

Privately funded and community-driven, Hands for Hunger relies on donations and events like Paradise Plates to sustain their mission. As the need for assistance grows, Hands for Hunger remains committed to reducing food waste and ensuring that no one in The Bahamas goes hungry.
